I’m so busy with projects that I don’t want to take time to file papers, purge documents, or organize my stacks. But, I really need to clear my desk. My desk looks like a hurricane dropped the contents of a file cabinet. When I think about what’s on my desktop as well, I have quite a few electronic files I can purge as well. And after being on the job for eight years, I have accumulated a large amount of outdated information, files and publications.

What kind of system is there to keep organized, on your desk and electronically? I need to do something about this before the new vice president says something. Could she? I know she glances at my desk when she comes by, making me wonder what’s she thinking. At this point, could I just be paranoid?

Another reason I want to purge and get rid of the clutter is to make room for creativity, opportunities and ideas. I have heard that when one declutters, one makes room for energy and space for new things come into our lives. Grace, I know I’d like a change, something new to come into my life.

Guiding Lesson: Eve, I love your thought of creating space to invite new opportunities, creativity and ideas in your life.  This plan already inspires me.  I can feel the energy moving, see doors opening and sensing breakthroughs in your life.

Before you begin, please take time to answer the following questions.  How serious are you about doing this?  Are you willing to stop, to reprioritize and begin this journey of decluttering?  Can you stay focused long enough to plow through your desk and electronic files?  How did you end up here? What habits need to change?  Does the clutter protect and serve you in any way?  Would you feel naked or uncomfortable without the clutter?  If the clutter could speak, what would it tell you?  What lessons would it want you to learn?  How attached are you to the clutter?  How does it make you feel when you see it?  If it wasn’t there, how would you feel?  Would you miss it?  Would you begin recreating the clutter with new projects?

I know these are a lot of questions.  But nothing will work unless you understand your motivation behind doing this as well as being committed to sustaining this way of living. If you answer these questions and still want to pursue this path, you will find that there are a lot of resources at your disposal.  There are books and experts who specialize in helping you declutter.

So what have you decided?  If you are interested, I will share resources with you on Twitter and Facebook so others can learn too.
